Ministries demonstrate how churches can help

By Julie Fitz-Gerald

September/October 2024

Environmental engineer Raj Singh (name changed for privacy) arrived in Canada from India in December 2021. He was a 25-year-old with high hopes. He found a basement apartment to rent and began a master’s degree at the University of Guelph (U of G). Then a shocking turn of events plunged him into crisis. While Singh was at school, his landlord was murdered in the home they shared.

Singh says a friend called to relay the terrible news, letting him know a police investigation was underway at the residence. “I didn’t want to stay in my basement apartment after something like that happening. I went back to the university and slept on a couch in one of the buildings.”
